Who are we?

The Kentucky Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force is a statewide initiative working to improve maternal health and save lives. In response to rising maternal deaths and complications, the Task Force brings together healthcare professionals, community leaders, and public health experts to identify causes and create solutions.
Supported by the State Maternal Health Innovation Program, we focus on early detection of complications, expanding access to care, and addressing health disparities. Through research, education, and collaboration, we aim to ensure that every mother in Kentucky has a safe, healthy journey through pregnancy and beyond.

Social Drivers

Every mother deserves a safe, healthy pregnancy and birth experience. Our Task Force is deeply committed to preventing maternal deaths and complications by looking beyond the hospital room—into the everyday conditions that shape a person’s health and well-being. We focus on the social factors that can affect maternal health, such as access to quality healthcare, safe housing, nutritious food, reliable transportation, and supportive workplaces. We also work to address the impact of racism, poverty, and other systemic barriers that can put some mothers at greater risk than others.

By listening to communities, analyzing data, and working with healthcare providers, local leaders, and families, we aim to create real, lasting change. Our goal is to make sure every mother—no matter where she lives or what her background is—has the support she needs to thrive before, during, and after pregnancy.

Obstetric Complications

Every pregnancy is unique, and while most go smoothly, some may come with unexpected medical challenges. Our Task Force is here to help ensure that when those challenges arise, mothers receive the care and support they need to stay safe and well.
We focus on understanding and preventing obstetric complications—medical conditions that can happen during pregnancy, labor, or after birth. These might include things like high blood pressure, heavy bleeding, or infections. While these situations can sound scary, many are treatable when caught early and managed with the right care.

That’s why we work closely with doctors, nurses, hospitals, and communities to improve how these complications are recognized and responded to. We promote early warning signs, better communication, and compassionate care—so that every mother feels heard, respected, and protected.
